Got Eggs?

Spring is in the air, which means Easter and egg hunts are right around the corner-- I mean literally, like next weekend. Between 2 different school egg hunts and a church mega-egg-hunt, my kiddos always end up with what seems like a thousand plastic eggs.

Each egg hunt they attend asks for a dozen or more plastic eggs, filled with candy or some other treat. The first year we participated in said hunts, when the twins were very little, we purchased the eggs. However, that was the only year we've ever participated in such foolishness. Oh, we still hunt eggs, we just don't buy them. :)

Each year, when the Easter baskets go back in the attic until the following spring, we also bag up all the plastic eggs (candy and treats removed) and put them in the same box as the baskets. Remember at Valentine's Day, when we talked about saving Halloween candy and repurposing it for Valentine's, because let's face it, hard candy doesn't go bad... like, ever? We do the same for the filled eggs at Easter.

I purposefully set aside candies the kids don't eat after the sugar high has worn off and the luster of new treats is gone in a bag of 'Easter candy' and store it in the pantry (I do the same for Christmas, Halloween, and Valentines, by the way). I just pull out the Easter candy bag and fill up the stored eggs. Voila! Filled eggs for the numerous egg hunts we will attend and we didn't spend a penny. Now that's what I call savin'! :) A word to the wise, don't store chocolate that long at room temperature, unless you want critters. If you're going to save it, put it in a freezer bag & stash it in the freezer, then thaw a few days before you need it. I promise it lasts, too!

Enjoy your egg hunts and happy Easter week, friends! Save on! :)
