Publix's Penny Item Policy

Before Christmas, a friend told me that Publix was going to start insisting that their customers have the penny item coupon from the newspaper, in order to purchase said item. If you're not sure what I'm talking about, go here. At first, I thought maybe this was just a local store decision-- apparently not.

Publix

Publix's corporate office has decided that their customers must now have that coupon from the newspaper, to take advantage of the weekly penny item. Although I am a huge fan of Publix, I'm not a huge fan of this decision and not every shopper loyal to Publix gets the daily paper.  Regardless, I went to my local store yesterday prepared to purchase the paper for no purpose other than to clip that mystery item coupon. There was one snag... THEY WERE SOLD OUT! Are you kidding me? Ugh. As much as it hurt me to go through the check out line without my penny item, I somehow managed to do it. The nice girl at the register, that I deal with almost every week, asked if I had talked with someone in management to see if they would waive the coupon, since all the papers were gone. No, of course not and there was no one around. Had I not been in a hurry and not had all 4 kids with me, I might have actually waited. I did ask, though, what the penny item was, in the off chance I couldn't live without it. Coffee... Nah. I'm good.

With the change in Publix's policy, I was bad mouthing the corporate decision to my checkout girl, who suggested I contact the corporate office (probably because she didn't want to listen to it, but whatever). To which I replied, "I think I will!"-- feeling a little like I needed to rip open my shirt and reveal the CS (for Clippin' & Savin', naturally) undershirt and vow to save consumers everywhere their hard earned money. :)

So I'm encouraging you to do the same. Go here to send Publix corporate an email, if you also disagree with their decision to require the coupon for the penny item. My hope is that if enough people do so, it will make a difference! Get to writing and save on, friends! :)

  1. OK so I wrote to them. I told them they made it nearly impossible to get the penny item anymore. I did request that IF they were going to require having the coupon then to put it in the Sunday paper.

  3. or make it so that you can print it off the website. I am not going to subscribe to the paper just to end up throwing most of it away....pardon recycle it of course. I already do that with the Sunday paper.

  4. Niskas, That's a GREAT idea! I love it! My friend Donna emailed Publix and actually got a call from our local manager today. The manager apologized profusely and vowed to take her concerns to the corporate office. Good! May many more people give their opinions and suggestions, as well! :)

And I hear ya. I'm not about to subscribe to the paper for a penny coupon. They don't even deliver the paper to where I live!
