You know when you check out at the grocery and they hand you not only your receipt (which you need to be sure to check for errors), but also other pieces of paper? How many times have you thrown those out without even looking to see what's on them? There was a time when I threw them out all the time without giving them so much as a second glance. What are those pieces of paper, anyway?
Sometimes at the register, you'll receive stuff like ads or recipes. I suppose it depends on your frame of mind as to whether those pieces of paper are useless. However, many times, you'll receive coupons or money off your next purchase. These are called catalinas (and I ain't talkin' 'bout no salad dressin'). :) Any time it's a coupon and says "manufacturer's coupon" at the top, where the date is, any store (under normal circumstances) will honor it, even if it printed off at Kroger and you're trying to use it at Walgreens. It's no different than a coupon you cut from the paper or printed on-line. However, this gets even better when you check out and are given money off your next purchase!
Drugstores are notorious for this and issue them with names like Register Rewards, UP Rewards, etc. Call it a ploy to earn your business, but if you concentrate on using them toward needed items in future sales, you can often get items for free or mere pennies. That said, the life of a catalina is roughly 4 weeks, so don't let perfectly good catalinas get lost under the seat of your car or thrown out! Stores like Kroger occasionally issue money-back catalinas, but mostly now give instant money discounts at the register.
The next time you check out, you should automatically do 3 things:
1) Check your receipt for pricing errors. This means you need to be paying attention as you meander the store tossing items in your basket. I used to work with a lady who never paid attention to prices in stores and never watched the register. There's no telling how many times she over paid for something. Hang on. I need to sit down just thinking about that... :)
2) Flip your receipt over. Many local businesses advertise on the reverse side and will post coupons there. Bonus ways to save! :)
3) Check out all the catalinas you're given, before ditching them. You might just be tossing out money!
Save on, friends! :)
